Virginia Beach INSHORE FISHING

Saltwater fishing is finally here!! Flounder, Drum and Bluefish have made their presence known in the 757 for inshore. Rudee Inlet has been the hot spot for these species while others are hitting doormat size flounder at popular wrecks. The chopper blues have taken a surprise center-stage in Rudee with those working top water skitters, SkitterV’s, X-Raps, and other top-water baits. The bite has either been hit or miss. But when it’s on people are getting 10lb+ blues screaming their drag. Pro tip: use a wire leader so you don’t lose those expensive hard plastics! Flounder have been showing up in decent numbers with most catching on Berkley GULP! and other soft plastics with tandem rigs working near structure and drop-offs around Rudee and other popular inshore waters.

The Drum have began to make their presence known as anglers are catching citation Red and Black Drum near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Fresh blue crabs and clams have been the bait of choice. Trophy Rockfish near the mouth of the Bay have started to get their move on with anglers catching decent size rockfish as well.

The class of puppy drum in our inshore waters of Rudee and Lynnhaven have been reporting exceptional fishing as well with some catching limits of slot to over-slot size red puppy drum.

OUTER BANKS FISHING REPORT

Bull Drum off the southern beaches of Hatteras and Ocracoke have been very popular with conditions being right over the past weeks of early May. The Bull Drum have shown up in large numbers within casting distance at beaches in Hatteras, Frisco, and Ocracoke. Look for those fish to be active over the next month into June. Reports of Cobia are coming in as well of anglers catching them off the beach at the Point in Buxton. Not crazy numbers, but this is a sure sign that things are certainly heating up. Striper fishing in the feeder rivers of the IBX have been very hot with water temps finally getting those fish on the move into spawning patterns. If catching 100+ fish interests you in a matter of a few hours, perhaps try Striper fishing one of the many feeder rivers of the Pamlico Sound. However these fish are slowly making their way further up river to locations such as Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids. Look for this fishery to continue to be hot for the next 30 days.

SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA FRESH WATER REPORT

The bass fishing in Southern Virginia and Easter North Carolina has continued to be hot. Reports are coming in of male, buck bass being caught shallow. Look for bass in lilly pads, in and around structure of spawning areas, and also for post-spawn fish in 6-10ft of water. Bass anglers are waiting for the blue gill spawn for the large female bass to get back shallow where they ambush blue gill beds.
